Not every simulated encounter should end in force. Instructors should be able to create, vary, pause and reset exercises without relying on specialist developers. Check whether behaviour can branch in response to the trainee and how quickly the system can be prepared for the next session.

Hardware and movement

Evaluate tracking accuracy, usable training area, representative equipment, freedom of movement and any constraints created by cables, cameras or room layout. Realism should be judged against the task being trained rather than by appearance alone.

After-action review

Ask to see the full instructor workflow: observation, intervention, replay, event chronology, notes, assessment and export. The review should help staff explain performance and plan the next training activity.

Deployment and support

Consider room size, power, networking, setup time, calibration, learner throughput, instructor training, maintenance, software updates and technical support. These factors determine whether a simulator becomes part of routine training or remains an occasional demonstration system.

Evidence, limitations and responsible claims

Research into immersive police training can provide useful evidence, but findings should be applied to the task, participants and measures used in each study. Simulation also has limitations.
