The debrief should ask what cues the learner noticed, what they believed was happening and why they selected a particular action. This reveals more than a score alone.
5. Assess more than accuracy
Hit rate and grouping remain useful for marksmanship, but professional training often requires a broader assessment. Depending on the exercise, record:
- safe handling and procedural compliance;
- time to recognise and respond to relevant cues;
- accuracy and target discrimination;
- communication and coordination;
- use of cover, positioning and movement;
- decision quality and proportionality; and
- the learner’s ability to explain their actions afterwards.
Use the same rubric for comparable sessions. This creates a traceable training record and helps instructors distinguish a one-off result from a consistent performance trend.
6. Integrate simulation with the wider training programme
A firearms simulator should complement dry drills, classroom instruction, practical exercises and live-fire training.
